Retro Game Guide to The Best Arcade Bars in Kansas City

Kansas City is world-renowned for its jazz, barbecue, and football fanatics. Yet, Kansas City is quietly becoming a mecca for a different, retro form of entertainment: the arcade bar. These establishments blend the nostalgic joy of 80s arcades and relaxed modern bars. If you're seeking to relive your arcade days while enjoying an adult beverage, Kansas City is your kind of town. Here at The Hills, one of KCs premier apartment communities, we love to help our residents find exciting entertainment opportunities. Thats why weve compiled this list of our six favorite arcade bars in the city. Whether youre a pinball wizard, Pac-Man afficionado, or just want to enjoy a beer with friends, one of these arcades will do the trick.

With that in mind, here are our recommendations for the best arcades in Kansas City.

Up-Down

Up-Down is arguably the most popular arcade in Kansas City and consistently ranks high in national reviews. This arcade is defined by its commitment to nostalgic vibes from the 80s and 90s, which includes pricing. All games cost only a quarter to play. This low cost to play ensures that the arcade is packed with gaming enthusiasts of all levels. With its downtown location in the Crossroads Arts District, the atmosphere is pure fun and excitement. If classic arcade games aren't your thing, you can also enjoy the Nintendo 64 games on a giant projection screen, skee-ball, life-size Jenga and Connect Four table games. The drink menu is also excellent, as Up-Down offers over 60 craft beers on tap. With the selection of games and beer, Up-Down is the perfect place for old-school fun.

Draftcade

If you don't want to drive all the way downtown for some gaming, Draftcade is an excellent choice that is only about a 15-minute drive from The Hills Apartments. Located in the Zona Rosa shopping center, Draftcade offers all-inclusive gaming for a single entry fee. This pricing model makes it a popular spot for those who want to spend hours gaming without having to worry too much about cost.

DoubleTap

There's no doubt that retro arcades are a blast, but what if you want something more modern? For that, we recommend DoubleTap. In addition to featuring retro games, Double Tap is best known for focusing heavily on modern VR gaming. Patrons are welcome to strap on a VR headset and handles and play a variety of multiplayer and single player titles. Gamers can choose from classic FPS, virtual escape rooms, Angry Birds, battle rocks, and much more. While primarily a gaming destination, DoubleTap also has a tasty menu. Patrons can choose from a variety of modern bar food like Wisconsin-style cheese curds, burgers, wings, and wraps.

403 Club

Located on the Kansas side of Kansas City, The 403 Club is a paradise for die-hard pinball fans. While most arcades consider pinball an afterthought, the 403 club prides itself on having a rotation of top-tier pinball machines. Additionally, this club hosts machines that are accredited with the International Flipper Pinball Association (IFPA). This curated expertise makes the 403 Club a nationally known location for competitive pinball. This pinball hub hosts high-level tournaments, attracting the top players from around the world, allowing spectators to watch the wizards work their magic. But don't let the aura of pinball wizards intimidate you. Every Wednesday, the 403 Club hosts beginner-friendly tournaments. On most days of the week, no tournaments are held, and the pinball machines are available to everyone with quarters. About a dozen beers are available on tap, and happy hour is from 4-7 daily.

Solid State Pinball Supply

If you're looking for a more laid-back pinball experience, we recommend Solid State Pinball Supply. While the 403 Club focuses on quality, Solid State Pinball Supply focuses on quantity. This pinball hub has an abundance of machines, some of which are over 50 years old. Additionally, Solid State offers "all-you-can-play" options for a flat fee. The atmosphere is relaxed and easy-going, and even has a BYOB policy, making it a great spot for a casual night of pinball.

Arcade Alley

While there are many amazing arcade bars in Kansas City, most are geared towards adults. In fact, most prohibit anyone under 21. If you're looking for an arcade for all ages, we recommend Arcade Alley, which allows minors until 7:00 pm. Arcade Alley still has a full-service bar and menu of gastropub classics.

Located in Downtown Lee's Summit, Arcade Alley fosters a community feel to their arcade. With a focus on retro 80s aesthetics, Arcade Alley is also a place where regulars quickly become friends.
