A Ramen Lover's Tour of Kansas City

There's nothing like a bowl of Ramen. Rich, hearty, and comforting, this savory soup makes for a hearty and affordable meal. The number one question, though, especially when you move to a new area, is where to find the best bowl in the city.

Today, we're here to point you toward some of the best Ramen options in Kansas City, MO, and recommend a few of our favorite menu options to get you started.

A bowl of noodles with a boiled egg, seaweed, and other toppings is being served with chopsticks.

Mama Ramen

As the name indicates, at Mama Ramen, Ramen isn't just a menu option. It's the star of the show, with tasty side dishes orbiting like satellites.

At Mama Ramen, you can customize your ultimate bowl, choosing from an array of noodle types, broths, proteins, and toppings. You can even adjust the spice levels to ensure the perfect dining experience.

Though the entire menu is worth a try, we especially recommend the spicy miso and pork belly bowl with rice noodles and your toppings of choice.

Your tastes may vary, of course. And this is the beauty of Mama Ramen. With every bowl made to order according to your exact specifications, the flavor possibilities are endless.

Just to note that Mama Ramen is closed on Tuesdays, so be sure to plan ahead!

KC Craft Ramen

Listed as Yelp's Top New Ramen Restaurants for 2024, KC Craft Ramen offers delicious Ramen dishes in an authentic, stimulating environment that not only stays true to its cultural roots but also takes into consideration its host city.

Take, for instance, the "KC Black," a signature dish featuring:

  • Pork chashu
  • Bean sprouts
  • Black mushrooms
  • Seasoned egg
  • Green onions
  • Corn
  • Seasoned bamboo shoots
  • Black garlic oil

The flavor combinations of this dish alone are insane, and it's just one of the options on the menu!

Like many of the Ramen shops featured in this list, KC Craft Ramen offers pick-up and delivery; however, we recommend that for your first visit at least you should plan to drop in and soak up the vibes.

Sama Zama

In Japanese, Sama Zama means "variety," and the menu lives up to the name. While you'll find a wide array of options available, the Ramen cannot be overlooked.

At Sama Zama, you can sample Tonkotsu Ramen, Miso Ramen, Vegeterian Ramen, and Chicken Ramen. Though the bowls are not as customizable as some others featured in this list, the upside is that the broths are notably delicious, and you do have the option of playing around with six add-on options.

Also, if you enjoy pairing drinks with your Ramen, Sama Zama offers a wide array of wine, beer, and exotic sodas!

Sama Zama is closed on Mondays, but if you're on the hunt any other day of the week, we recommend giving Sama Zama a try.

OMO Japanese Ramen & Sushi

OMO Japanese Ramen & Shushi not only offers eight remarkably delicious Ramen options, both broth-based and dry, but they also offer the simple "Broth and Noodles Only" option for those who like to keep things no-frills.

For our part, we recommend the Black Tonkotsu Ramen, featuring a pork-based broth and house garlic oil, topped with sliced pork, half of an egg, bean sprouts, scallions, sweet corn, seaweed paper, and bok choy. Pair this option with some dragon balls or veggie tempura for the table, and you have yourself a dynamite meal.

If you love beer and cocktails, move OMO Japanese Ramen & Sushi up your list, as they are known not just for their food but also for their drinks.

Aoyama Ramen

At Aoyama Ramen, along with premium rice bowls and an array of small bites, you'll find some of the most savory and affordable Ramen in Kansas City, MO.

With nine Ramen options to choose from, you'll have your work cut out for you deciding where to start on the menu. In our opinion, you can't go wrong with the Sho-Yu Ramen or Rich Garlic Ramen! Then again, this is one of the only places in the city where you'll find a Curry Ramen option, so perhaps it's best to start there.
